Gluten Free Creamy Hot Cereal

When I want a breakfast that’s quick and easy to make, with easy cleanup, this is one of my go-to recipes.

Looking for a gluten free cereal similar to cream of wheat? 

Making brown rice cereal at home is easy and more cost-effective than buying brown rice cereal in the store. There also could be additional additives that you don’t want in your cereal. All you need is some brown rice (I prefer the organic) and a grinder. You’ll have brown rice hot cereal that tastes similar to Cream of Wheat in under 10 minutes.

Are there times when you just don’t want a full-course breakfast? I recognize that for some of you, breakfast may not even be your favorite meal.

There have certainly been times when I haven't wanted a full-course breakfast; in fact, that’s most times, in part because there’s clean-up later and I like easy clean-up, but there are also times when I want pancakes, and when that happens, the pancakes win out, and I deal with the dishes that come with that. Right now, if this is an easy clean-up day, this quick breakfast you can eat as either sweet or savory, add whatever toppings you like, and you’ll have your breakfast bowl in under 10 minutes. You could even prepare this to go, for those of you that need to make it and head out the door. 

To start, measure out ½ cup of brown rice. Place into the grinder and grind to a fine consistency. Measure out ½ cup of ground brown rice since ½ cup of brown rice and ground brown rice won’t measure the same. 

In a small saucepan, add 1 ½ cups of water. Add in the ground brown rice and stir. On medium-high heat, stir until it starts to thicken. About 3-4 minutes. Stir and continue stirring until the water is absorbed, about another 5 minutes. Place into a bowl, and add the salt, vanilla, and sweetener. If you want a thinner consistency, add a splash of your favorite non-dairy milk. Add your favorite fruit and other toppings.

Gluten Free Creamy Hot Cereal

Yield 1-2

Ingredients 

1/2 cup brown rice

1.5 cups water 

1/4 tsp salt 

1/2 tsp vanilla

Any fruit toppings 

Raw honey (optional ) 

Directions 

In a grain mill or coffee grinder, mill the rice until fine.

In a small sauce pan, add the brown rice and the water, and cook on medium heat until water is absorbed and rice is cooked through about 10 minutes. Should be the same consistency as cream of wheat would be.

Add your favorite non dairy milk to create the consistency you like. 

Add your favorite toppings.
